PTE Academic vs PTE Core: Differences and Which to Choose?

After that, a handful of question types separate them: Core drops Write Essay, Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion and Highlight Correct Summary, adds Write Email, and changes the word limits on both summary tasks. Respond to a Situation appears in both tests, whatever older summaries say.

Both are two-hour Pearson tests taken at a test center, both are scored 10-90 and both scores stay valid for two years. They differ in test purpose, content setting and a few question types, with Write Email in PTE Core replacing Write Essay. Check results guidance and the current India fee separately for each test.

How Does the Test Format Differ Between PTE Academic and PTE Core?

Published Academic and Core section ranges; card widths do not represent time — Academic and Core publish different section ranges; compare the exact test version.

Both run in three parts, but Part 1 Speaking & Writing is shorter in PTE Core (50-65 minutes, 7 question types) than in PTE Academic (76-84 minutes, 9 question types), and Core Listening drops one task. Core’s published Reading range is 27-37 minutes versus 23-30 for Academic; the ranges overlap, so this does not mean every Core Reading sitting is longer.

Part 2 Reading has the same five tasks in both tests. PTE Core names the dropdown task "Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks" and the drag-and-drop task plain "Fill in the Blanks". The Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers text runs up to 350 words in Academic and up to 275 words in Core.

Part 3 Listening has one type fewer in Core because Highlight Correct Summary isn't in PTE Core. Pearson's Core Listening page lists seven tasks without it: Summarize Spoken Text, Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers), Fill in the Blanks, Multiple Choice (Single Answer), Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Words and Write from Dictation.

Which Question Types Differ Between PTE Academic and PTE Core?

PTE Academic has Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion, Write Essay and Highlight Correct Summary, which PTE Core does not; PTE Core has Write Email, which PTE Academic does not. Several shared tasks also run to different specs, and the two Listening rows show the one Part 3 change.

Four tasks carry the same name in both tests but work differently.

Summarize Written Text: Academic asks for one sentence of 5-75 words; Core asks for 25-50 words in one or more sentences, with 10 minutes.
Summarize Spoken Text: Academic wants 50-70 words in 10 minutes after a 60-90 second prompt; Core wants 20-30 words in 8 minutes after 45-75 seconds.
Respond to a Situation: Academic gives 10 seconds to prepare and 40 to answer; Core gives 20 seconds to prepare after the audio, 40 to answer, and scores Appropriacy, Fluency and Pronunciation.
Answer Short Question: the same short spoken answer in both tests, but Academic scores it for listening only, while Core scores listening and speaking.

The writing tasks show the gap most clearly. Write Essay asks for a 200-300 word argumentative essay in 20 minutes. Write Email asks for an 80-120 word email answering a prompt of up to 100 words, in 9 minutes. It must cover all three bullet points with a salutation, an introduction, a conclusion and a farewell. Pearson's Form trait gives full credit from 50 to 120 words, but aim for the 80-120 range the task instructions set.

Some prep sites still say Respond to a Situation is Core-only; Pearson added it to PTE Academic, with Summarize Group Discussion, for tests taken after August 7, 2025.

How Does the Scoring System Differ Between PTE Academic and PTE Core?

Pearson's PTE Core scoring page sets the skill score range for each CLB level. Two common targets look like this.

Is PTE Core Easier Than PTE Academic?

Pearson doesn't rank one test as easier, and the two score scales should not be treated as interchangeable. On paper, PTE Core asks for less: everyday content instead of lectures and academic texts, a Part 1 of 50-65 minutes against 76-84, and no Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion or Highlight Correct Summary.

Its Write Email needs 80-120 words in 9 minutes, while Write Essay needs 200-300 words in 20. Test difficulty still comes down to the target score your program demands, and an easier test is no help if the body reading your score doesn't accept it.

Before booking, confirm this requirement with the official test provider or receiving authority. On test day, follow your administrator’s instructions and any approved arrangements.

How Should You Prepare for PTE Core Compared With PTE Academic?

Prepare for the tasks your test actually has: drop Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion, Highlight Correct Summary and Write Essay practice for PTE Core, and add Write Email practice. Work through these five steps for your version.

For Core, write emails that answer all three bullet points, with a salutation, introduction, conclusion and farewell, in 9 minutes.
For Core, keep Summarize Spoken Text to 20-30 words and Summarize Written Text to 25-50 words.
For Academic, write a 200-300 word Write Essay response in 20 minutes, then check it against the prompt.
For Academic, practice Retell Lecture and Summarize Group Discussion by taking notes on the noteboard while the audio plays.
For both, take a full timed mock test of the right version before test day.
