How to Retake the PTE Exam? Process, Fees and Rules
Understanding PTE
Your score came in short of the target, and you want another go. Pearson's Retake Policy lets you book a full new test once the scores from your last one arrive. You can do it up to 12 times in a rolling 12-month window, with one booking at a time in your myPTE account.
The most searched idea, a one-skill retake, is an IELTS feature, and on PTE the answer is a plain no.

How Many Times Can You Retake the PTE in a Year?

Not without limit: Pearson allows up to 12 tests within a 12-month window, and considers more only through its exception form. You can sit more than one test a month, so the retake limit counts tests in any rolling year, not per month. If you reach 12 attempts, check when an earlier test falls outside the 12-month window, or request Pearson's exception; do not assume a fixed waiting period.
To ask for more attempts, submit the exception form linked from Pearson's Retake Policy and explain your reason. Pearson says only that more attempts may be granted in some cases, so plan as if approval won't come. Some prep sites still quote "no limit"; Pearson's current Retake Policy says 12 in 12 months.
How Soon Can You Book a PTE Retake?

You can book as soon as you've received the scores from your last test, and the next convenient date can fall within the same month. Results usually arrive within two days and can take up to five working days, longer if Pearson flags a test for extra review. Because you can hold only one booking at a time under the single booking rule, the retake can't be booked before the first result lands.
How soon you should retake depends on the gap to your target. Use timed practice and feedback to estimate your own preparation needs; a point gap does not guarantee a fixed improvement time. Book the next date only once your practice covers that gap.
Is There Any One Skill Retake in PTE?
No, PTE has no single-section retake; to improve one skill you book and sit a full new test. Pearson's retake rules describe only booking a new test. The search demand for a one skill retake comes from IELTS One Skill Retake, which lets IELTS candidates resit a single section. On PTE, a new test can raise or lower every one of your skill scores, so your plan has to lift the weak skill without letting the strong ones slip.
What Are the PTE Retake Rules?
The retake rules are wait for your scores, hold one booking at a time, stay within 12 tests in 12 months, book up to 6 months ahead, and use one Pearson account. Pearson's Retake Policy has applied since 8 August 2024, and its rules read as follows.
| Rule | What Pearson says |
|---|---|
| When you can book | Only after the scores from your last test arrive. |
| Bookings at a time | One, under the single booking rule. |
| How far ahead | Up to 6 months in advance. |
| How often | Up to 12 tests in a rolling 12-month window. |
| Accounts | A single account; a second one delays future score release and may breach the malpractice policy. |
| Rescore | Not possible once you have booked another test. |
How Do You Retake the PTE Exam Step by Step?
The retake process is wait for your scores, decide on a rescore first, then book a full new test for the next date that suits you. Follow these steps in order.
- Check your scores in myPTE: click View Score on the homepage, or go to My Activity and choose View Score next to the test.
- Decide on a rescore before booking, because a booked test blocks it; the rescore window is 14 calendar days from when your score becomes available.
- Pick a date that leaves room for results before any application deadline.
- Make the new booking in the same account you used before.
- Prepare against your weakest skill until test day.
The booking screens match a first booking, which our PTE booking guide covers screen by screen.
How Much Is the PTE Retake Fee?
Select the country where you will sit the test and the exact test product in Pearson's fee finder. Then choose an available appointment in myPTE and check the displayed total, currency and payment terms before paying. Save the confirmation and receipt. This guide does not quote a current country price.
What Mistakes Should You Avoid to Stay Within the Retake Limit?
The mistakes that waste attempts are rushing to retake, opening multiple accounts, and booking before you've decided on a rescore. Each one costs either a test inside your retake limit or a choice you can't undo. Watch for these four.
- Rushing to retake: booking the next test before your practice scores show the weak skill has moved spends an attempt without a plan.
- Before booking, confirm this requirement with the official test provider or receiving authority. On test day, follow your administrator’s instructions and any approved arrangements.
- Booking before a rescore decision: once a new test is booked, the rescore option closes.
- Skipping a mock test: booking without a full timed mock test leaves you guessing about readiness.
How Do You Prepare for a PTE Retake With Mock Tests?
The best retake plan is a full timed mock test, a comparison of its skill scores with your last report, and focused work on the weakest skill before you book. Diagnose first, then practice, re-test, and only then book. Your real score report shows skill scores rather than question-type scores, so use it to pick the weakest skill, then use the mock's per-question-type results to name the items to practice.
How Do Mock Tests Help You Find Weak Areas Before a Retake?
A full timed mock test shows which skill and which question types pulled your score down, so the weeks before the retake go to those items. That turns weak areas into a short practice list. Our PTE preparation plan sets out how to schedule those weeks.
Is It Worth Requesting a PTE Rescore Before You Retake?
Select the country where you will sit the test and the exact test product in Pearson's fee finder. Then choose an available appointment in myPTE and check the displayed total, currency and payment terms before paying. Save the confirmation and receipt. This guide does not quote a current country price.
Any score change, up or down, overwrites the old score. The full rescore rules and fee sit on our PTE results and rescore page.
Which PTE Score Do Universities and Visa Bodies See After a Retake?
Open the exact institution, course or professional regulator’s current requirements page. Confirm the accepted test version, overall and per-skill minimums, test-age window and verification method before booking. A provider’s recognition total or a concordance does not establish your own admission or registration requirements.
How Is a PTE Retake Different From a Reschedule?
A retake is a new test after you receive scores, while a reschedule moves a test you have not taken yet. A reschedule only changes the date of a booked test. See PTE rescheduling and cancellation for those rules.
How should I use this Retake guide?
Use the task guidance and authored practice examples, then check Pearson’s current instructions for your exact test. Confirm any application, fee, age or ID requirement directly with its owner before booking. Practice estimates are not official scores.
