PTE Score Chart: Skill-Wise and Complete Guide for 2026
Scores and Results
The PTE score chart places any 10-90 score on the Global Scale of English against a CEFR level, an IELTS Academic score and, for PTE Core, the Canadian Language Benchmarks.
The tables below summarize Pearson’s published alignments; this is an independent PTE Practice guide. July 2025 concordance places PTE Academic overall 63–70 alongside IELTS Academic 7.0. Each skill has its own alignment. An alignment is an estimate, not an accepting body’s entry rule.

What Is the PTE Score Chart?
The PTE score chart is Pearson's set of tables that tell you what a 10-90 PTE score means in CEFR levels, IELTS Academic scores and, for PTE Core, Canadian Language Benchmarks. It reads one number on the 10-90 scale, and there is no single official chart document. The tables sit on Pearson's scoring pages and in its Score Guide, and each answers a different question: your CEFR level, your IELTS equivalent or your CLB level for Canadian immigration.
PTE has no bands, so anyone after a "PTE score in bands" needs Pearson's IELTS concordance to turn the number into an IELTS band.
How Does the PTE Global Scale of English Run From 10 to 90?
Pearson grades PTE against the Global Scale of English, reporting an overall score and four communicative skills scores, each from 10 to 90, with 90 the highest. PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI share the same 10-90 scale. PTE Core reports on the same 10-90 range and aligns it to CLB levels. The Score Report shows the numbers, and the Skills Profile adds detailed feedback with personal recommendations.
How Does the PTE Score Chart Work for Each Skill?
Each communicative skill has a score from 10 to 90. For PTE Academic, overall and skill-specific IELTS tables are different. PTE Core CLB conversion applies separately to Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing; there is no overall CLB conversion in the table.
| Score | Range | Tasks that feed it (Academic Score Guide) |
|---|---|---|
| Overall | 10-90 | All 65-75 questions across the 22 question types. |
| Speaking score | 10-90 | Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion, Respond to a Situation. |
| Writing score | 10-90 | Summarize Written Text, Write Essay, Summarize Spoken Text, Write from Dictation. |
| Reading score | 10-90 | The five Reading-part tasks, plus Summarize Written Text, Highlight Correct Summary and Highlight Incorrect Words. |
| Listening score | 10-90 | All eight Listening-part tasks, plus Repeat Sentence, Retell Lecture, Answer Short Question and Summarize Group Discussion. |
Pearson reports skill scores, not section scores. Because some tasks count toward two skills, a section-wise or module-wise score doesn't exist on the report. Pearson's task web pages say Read Aloud also counts toward reading, but the Academic Score Guide scores it for Speaking only, and the table follows the Score Guide.
Is the PTE Overall Score the Average of Four Skills?
The official overall score is based on the complete test, not the mean of four reported skill scores. Pearson’s explanation includes question performance, difficulty and weighting. A four-input average cannot reconstruct it. Current reports use a Skills Profile rather than the old enabling-skills report section.
What Is the PTE Score to CEFR Chart?

Pearson maps 85-90 to C2, 76-84 to C1, 59-75 to B2, 43-58 to B1, 30-42 to A2 and 10-29 to A1. Pearson's Understand your score page pairs each range with a score descriptor, and the Council of Europe groups the six levels into three kinds of user.
| PTE score range | CEFR level | CEFR user group | What a test taker at this level can do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85-90 | C2 | Proficient user | Understand virtually everything heard or read with ease. |
| 76-84 | C1 | Proficient user | Express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much searching for words. |
| 59-75 | B2 | Independent user | Understand the main ideas of complex text on concrete and abstract topics. |
| 43-58 | B1 | Independent user | Deal with most situations likely to arise where the language is spoken. |
| 30-42 | A2 | Basic user | Communicate in simple, routine tasks with a direct exchange of information. |
| 10-29 | A1 | Basic user | Introduce themselves and ask and answer questions about personal details. |
Pearson’s descriptor table and its overlapping CEFR alignment graphic serve different purposes. Use the labelled descriptor bands above to read those descriptions, and preserve the overlap when showing Pearson’s graphic. Do not treat an approximate alignment as a guarantee of a particular university or visa outcome.
How Does the PTE to IELTS Academic Score Comparison Work?

Pearson's concordance, updated from July 2025 research, gives a PTE range for each IELTS Academic score, starting at 63 for 7.0, 79 for 8.0, 86 for 8.5 and 90 for 9.0. The full score concordance runs in ten steps, and the first number of each range is the minimum PTE score.
| IELTS Academic score | PTE Academic overall range |
|---|---|
| 4.5 | 24-30 |
| 5.0 | 31-38 |
| 5.5 | 39-46 |
| 6.0 | 47-54 |
| 6.5 | 55-62 |
| 7.0 | 63-70 |
| 7.5 | 71-78 |
| 8.0 | 79-85 |
| 8.5 | 86-89 |
| 9.0 | 90 |
The alignment reflects Pearson’s July 2025 concordance update. It describes an approximate relationship between test scores, with measurement uncertainty. A university or government may publish its own accepted PTE thresholds; check those directly rather than converting an IELTS requirement yourself.
How Do You Read the PTE Score Chart With IELTS?
Each PTE range starts at the minimum threshold for that IELTS score, so a PTE 68 sits at IELTS 7.0 until it reaches 71, the line for IELTS 7.5. Our PTE vs IELTS score conversion covers the full comparison and which test suits whom.
What Are the Section-Wise PTE Scores for Each IELTS Score?
Pearson's per-skill concordance, also from July 2025, gives a section-wise PTE range for each skill, and the skill ranges differ from the overall ones.
| IELTS score | PTE Listening | PTE Reading | PTE Speaking | PTE Writing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4.5 | 26-32 | 29-35 | 14-23 | 17-28 |
| 5.0 | 33-39 | 36-41 | 24-38 | 29-40 |
| 5.5 | 40-46 | 42-47 | 39-53 | 41-50 |
| 6.0 | 47-52 | 48-53 | 54-65 | 51-59 |
| 6.5 | 53-57 | 54-58 | 66-75 | 60-68 |
| 7.0 | 58-63 | 59-64 | 76-82 | 69-76 |
| 7.5 | 64-68 | 65-69 | 83-87 | 77-84 |
| 8.0 | 69-74 | 70-74 | 88-89 | 85-89 |
| 8.5 | 75-80 | 75-80 | 90 | 90 |
| 9.0 | 81-90 | 81-90 | Not given | Not given |
Speaking and Writing need much higher PTE numbers than Listening and Reading for the same IELTS score: IELTS 7.0 starts at 58 in Listening but 76 in Speaking. Pearson notes that very few IELTS test takers score 9 in Speaking and Writing, which is why those two cells are blank.
What Is the PTE Core Score Chart?

PTE Core reports the same 10-90 scores, and Pearson aligns each skill to a Canadian Language Benchmark. For example, CLB 7 is Listening 60-70, Reading 60-68, Speaking 68-75 and Writing 69-78. Pearson's PTE Core scoring page gives the per-skill range for each level of the Canadian Language Benchmarks.
| CLB level | Listening | Reading | Speaking | Writing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 | 89-90 | 88-90 | 89-90 | 90 |
| CLB 9 | 82-88 | 78-87 | 84-88 | 88-89 |
| CLB 8 | 71-81 | 69-77 | 76-83 | 79-87 |
| CLB 7 | 60-70 | 60-68 | 68-75 | 69-78 |
| CLB 6 | 50-59 | 51-59 | 59-67 | 60-68 |
| CLB 5 | 39-49 | 42-50 | 51-58 | 51-59 |
| CLB 4 | 28-38 | 33-41 | 42-50 | 41-50 |
| CLB 3 | 18-27 | 24-32 | 34-41 | 32-40 |
The ranges differ by skill, so the same number can mean different CLB levels. A 69 is CLB 8 in Reading but CLB 7 in Listening and Speaking. IRCC sets the requirement for each program, so check IRCC before you book.
How Does PTE Academic Differ From PTE Core?
Choose the test accepted for your purpose: PTE Academic for accepting institutions and specified routes, Academic UKVI where the route requires that SELT, and Core for eligible Canadian programmes. The CLB table above applies only to PTE Core. Confirm acceptance with the institution or government.
What Are the General Program and Requirement Benchmarks?
Pearson's typical ranges are 36-50 for foundation courses, 51-60 for an undergraduate degree and 57-67 for a postgraduate degree; each institution sets its own requirement, and Pearson's scoring page gives no visa numbers. The table pairs each goal with the place its real figure is published.
| Goal | Typical PTE range (Pearson) | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation courses | 36-50 | The college's course page. |
| Undergraduate degree | 51-60 | The university's entry requirements, often set per course. |
| Postgraduate degree | 57-67 | The program page, which may add a minimum for each skill. |
| Visas | No figure on Pearson's scoring page | The government's own site; Australia's requirements recently changed. |
Our country pages list each visa requirement with its government source, from Australia and the UK to Canada and New Zealand.
What Changed in the 2026 PTE Score Chart?
The main change is Pearson's IELTS concordance, updated from research published in July 2025, which moved the PTE figure for IELTS 7.0 to 63; Pearson notes that the CEFR table is unchanged. The 2026 score chart differs from older charts in three ways.
- The new concordance resets the IELTS steps: IELTS 7.0 now starts at PTE 63 overall, and each skill has its own range.
- The CEFR table is unchanged, so 59-75 is still B2 and 76-84 is still C1.
- The score report no longer shows the old enabling skills; it shows communicative skills plus a Skills Profile.
How Do You Read the Score Chart of PTE?
First identify the test variant and whether your number is overall or a particular skill. Use the matching IELTS column for Academic, or the matching skill column for Core CLB. Then check the accepting body’s published requirement, including every required skill.
What Score Is 7 Each in PTE?
Per skill, IELTS 7.0 starts at 58 Listening, 59 Reading, 76 Speaking and 69 Writing, while the overall line for IELTS 7.0 is PTE 63. Australia's Proficient English uses exactly those per-skill minimums for tests from 7 August 2025. A flat 63 in every skill would miss the Speaking and Writing lines, unless the body that set "7 each" publishes its own PTE figure.
How Much Is 6.5 Each in PTE?
Pearson's skill table puts the start of IELTS 6.5 at 53 Listening, 54 Reading, 66 Speaking and 60 Writing; the overall line is PTE 55. So "6.5 each" needs a higher Speaking and Writing score than a flat 55.
How Much Is 6 Each in PTE?
"6 each" in PTE means 47 Listening, 48 Reading, 54 Speaking and 51 Writing, the start of IELTS 6.0 in each skill on Pearson's concordance; the overall line is PTE 47. Australia's Competent English uses exactly these minimums for tests from 7 August 2025.
What Is PTE 46, 50, 55, 57 or 60 Equivalent to in IELTS?
As overall scores on Pearson's July 2025 concordance, PTE 46 lines up with IELTS 5.5, PTE 50 with IELTS 6.0, and PTE 55, PTE 57 and PTE 60 all with IELTS 6.5.
| PTE overall score | Pearson range | IELTS Academic | CEFR |
|---|---|---|---|
| 46 | 39-46 | 5.5 | B1 |
| 50 | 47-54 | 6.0 | B1 |
| 55 | 55-62 | 6.5 | B1 |
| 57 | 55-62 | 6.5 | B1 |
| 60 | 55-62 | 6.5 | B2 |
These are overall lookups; for a single skill, read the section-wise table instead.
What Is a 65 Score in PTE?
A 65 score sits in Pearson's 59-75 range (B2 level), above 63, the PTE line for IELTS 7.0, and below 71, the line for 7.5. Overall, it clears an IELTS 7.0 equivalent by a 2-point margin. In Speaking alone, though, 65 lines up with IELTS 6.0 (54-65) on the per-skill table. To see what B2 level means on the CEFR scale from A1 to C2, read our guide to English proficiency tests and levels.
What's a Good Score in PTE?
A good score is the one that clears your target with a margin; read it against the CEFR table and the requirement, not against a single number. Our page on what is a good PTE score covers it in depth.
