What Is the PTE Exam Pattern?

PTE Academic is a single two-hour test in three parts: Speaking & Writing (76-84 minutes, 9 question types), Reading (23-30 minutes, 5 question types) and Listening (31-39 minutes, 8 question types), 22 question types in all. Pearson's exam pattern for each part looks like this.

PTE Core lists 50-65, 27-37 and 22-37 minutes, with 7, 5 and 7 question types. Do not add separate section minima or maxima to predict a sitting: the Academic Score Guide explains that test versions are balanced for total length. Academic has 22 scored question types, while Core has 19.

How Long Is Each Part of the PTE Exam Format?

In PTE Academic, Speaking & Writing takes 76-84 minutes, Reading 23-30 minutes and Listening 31-39 minutes, in that fixed order. Pearson runs the parts back to back in one sitting. Pearson fixes 9, 5 and 8 question types in those parts, so plan your section timing around the upper end of each range. How Do You Register for the PTE Exam?

Create a myPTE account, choose your test, test center, date and time, answer the booking questions and pay; you can book up to 6 months ahead. Registration runs from Pearson's test finder to a confirmation email in these steps.

1. Click "Book a test" and answer where you want to go and what you want to do there, so Pearson suggests the right test.
2. Choose a test center and a date and time at least 24 hours away.
3. Create your myPTE account with your name exactly as on your passport, putting middle names in "Given names".
4. Answer the booking questions about your background and test purpose.
5. Agree to the Admission, Reschedule and Cancellation policies.
6. Pay, click "Submit Order", then check myPTE and your email for the confirmation.

A name that doesn't match your passport means no test and no refund, and you should contact Pearson promptly to correct a mismatch before test day. You can also book by phone through Pearson's customer support call centers or through an authorized PTE partner. Under the retake policy, you hold one booking at a time, book again only after your last scores arrive, and sit up to 12 tests in 12 months.

How Do You Prepare for the PTE Exam?

Learn the three parts and their 22 question types, practice each task under real timings, and take full timed mock tests to see where your score stands. Good PTE preparation moves from knowing the test to rehearsing it.

3. Block a weekly plan with two speaking days, two writing days and one day each for reading and listening.
4. Drill the high-volume tasks daily, starting with Repeat Sentence (10-12 items) and Read Aloud (6-7).
5. Record each speaking answer, replay it, and mark every restart or long pause before you try again.
6. Type 10 dictated sentences a day from podcasts or news clips to train Write from Dictation spelling.
7. Do timed practice by part, stopping Speaking & Writing at 84 minutes and Reading at 30.
